There are many voices offering spiritual advise. Which ones should we listen to? The preacher? The spiritual advisor? The palm reader? The terot card reader? The tea leave reader…and all the other readers? Which ones should lead us? We should all want to know how to be led by God. How can we be sure we’re hearing from God?
In a related post, ‘Denominational Churches‘, I talked about the people I met while painting en plein air at St. Andrew’s Catholic church in Pasadena, CA. Because of the interesting architecture of the church, I return here every couple of years to paint another view. This one is the view of the back of the church, which I painted over 10 years ago.
I wrote a scripture on the left side of the painting which reads; ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths’. Proverbs 3:5,6
When I wrote this 10 years ago, no one stopped to talk to me. Thus, I wasn’t able to talk to anyone about Jesus. I do recall a lady walking by, glancing down at the painting, then up at me in seemingly contempt as she continued walking. By the time I had finished the painting, I was asking myself, “What’s up God?”
Advancing God’s Kingdom
Does this mean that I missed God and that He didn’t lead me to this particular spot to paint? I don’t know. But this is one way I judge my actions when things don’t go as I expected. I ask myself, “Did I do anything to violate the scriptures?” I hope my answer will always be “No.” Next I ask myself, “Were my efforts an attempt to promote and further God’s kingdom?” I hope my answer will always be yes.
In this particular situation, I can say without reservation that my desire was to share Christ with another person with the hope that they will come closer to God. The scriptures state, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15
The Bible, The Key
The scriptures should be the compass by which God directs our steps. “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 A lifestyle exemplifying Christ is one of the best ways to be led by God.
