Looking Back to 2001: Beginning the JEPA Series

Looking Back –

This watercolor, ‘Billy’s School’ was painted on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood in 2001. That was the year I began to paint en plein air for the purpose of sharing Christ with curious onlookers. The series of paintings that have been created came to be known as ‘Jesus En Plein Air‘, or the acronym, JEPA (pronounced: zha•pa’).

It’s fun looking back as I remember the encounters I had that day. Some of the details are as vivid today (3-4-14) as the day it happened. I can also see how my painting style has changed in the intervening 13 years, 100’s of paintings and 1000’s of lives touched for Christ Jesus.

Many people have been saved on those street corners. Also, the seed of God’s word has been sown in those who did not make a decision for Christ. I take comfort in the scripture: “So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

The following is what I wrote back in 2001.

Art and Outreach

I talked to several people about Jesus. One was a young song writer. He said that he writes about the Holy Spirit, but he believes people are not ready for that yet. I told him it’s better to put it out there and let people catch up than to hold back and hope that someone shows up.

Another gentleman was a poet named Ferrari. I asked him to read to me some of his work . He seemed reticent at first to share his art, but soon acquiesced. He read a poem commemorating the tragedy of 9/11. Afterward, he showed me a letter he received from the White House thanking him for the poem. Then he read a love poem. It was breathtaking. I encouraged him to seek a publisher as I encouraged him to seek Jesus.

Soon I was surrounded be a group of young people. Billy seemed to have been the leader. They attended the school which was connected to the church. We had a great time together as they watched me paint while I listened to their aspirations. Of course, I told them that Jesus could help fulfill all their godly desires.
