'Rio Favala'
The beauty of Rio de Janeiro is tempered by the sight of the Favalas. Although they look inviting from this high vantage point, it is ascutally where the poorest of the poor exist in drug and crime riddled communities.

Rio was the last stop for the missions team I was traveling with. We had spent two intense weeks in Sao Paulo and the Quilombos in ministry. We were in Rio for some R&R (rest and relaxation) before returning to the United States. I did this painting in my studio after my return. It was taken from a quick watercolor sketch I did from Corcovado Mountain where the Cristo Redentor looks out over all Reo.

I wanted to take my paints into one of the Favallas to paint and share Christ, but was unable to do so this time. Nevertheless, this painting serves as a reminder to pray for the people there. Only God’s Word and prayer can truly free them from their burden.
