I do my best not to get caught sketching people en plein air, but sometimes other people are just as curious about me as I am about them. The guy with the crutches was the first one to notice, so I smiled and waved to him. He waved back. There were actually three men having a tailgate party outside the coffee shop where I was enjoying the day with my wife. The biggest guy turned away from his friends and came walking toward me.
When he sauntered over behind me, I covered the drawing with my hand. Then I thought, ‘Let him see,’ so I removed my hand. He didn’t say anything about the drawing, but on his way back to his friends, he asked me in a very jovial manner if I had seen a certain KFC television commercial. I said no at first, but when he started describing it (a kid and his grandfather get into a fight), I realized I had. If there was a hidden message there, I didn’t get it. We had a big laugh. He returned to his friends. I’m not sure if he said anything to them about what I was doing because they continued with their conversation as though I wasn’t there. I suppose I owe him a big thanks if he was covering for me.
